The author has a background in academics, with a Ph.D. in Economic Geography from the School of Economics in Göteborg. The dissertation discussed geo-politics, trade and practical transport issues, with a focus on ports and shipping in Russia and the Baltic States in the years following the break-up of the Soviet Union. During a Post-Doc year at the Slavic Research Centre at Hokkaido University in Japan, he conducted a large study, writing another book with a similar approach, covering North East Asia. Since, the Author has first worked at the Swedish Maritime Administration, with international issues and the relation to the EU, including Swedish applications for financial support. Then three years at the Swedish Transport Administration, as nationally responsible for shipping and ports, including the follow-up of Swedish EU projects in shipping and port. Since 2014 the author is a private consultant in the same field, but lately in semiretirement. A position which is practically necessary to be able to follow the international debate about ships emission over the last years, and then find the time to write about it. The author is also the only private expert representative, qualified in personal capacity, to have been admitted into the European Commission’s advisory forum for shipping; European Sustainable Shipping Forum (ESSF).
